These historical images give us a window into school life in Australia.
Some of the images were contributed by members of the public, either as part of a larger donation or through the upload facility on this site. Others were drawn from state libraries*. They are exceptional early photographs dating from approximately 1875. Collectively they visually tell part of the story of schooling in Australia since colonisation.
*These were located by a National Library of Australia ‘Trove’ search that revealed over 8,000 images with ‘school’ in the title dated between 1870 and 1920.
ANME is seeking similar images of schools, especially those showing school groups, events, and early buildings. We are also eager to share written stories about Australian school life. Consider uploading your own recollections and pictures of school life in Australia. Click on the Contribute button below for information on how to add your voice to the story.
