Physical collection
The physical collection
The ANME is one of Australia’s leading repositories of historical educational documents, textbooks, scholarly journals, teaching records, registers and materials, award certificates, biographies, school histories, and memorabilia.
The University of Canberra is home to our physical collection. This collection contains over 5,000 texts, two-thirds of which relate to 19th century education in Australia. It also comprises over 7,000 paper items including educational ephemera and 500 objects. Many people across Australia have donated significant items to the collection.
In the Significance Assessment Report of the Collection, Dr Roslyn Russell states, “The ANME Collection, as the many displays mounted in the University of Canberra attest, has high interpretive capacity and can itself, be used to educate current and future generations in the educational methods and experiences of the past.”
Would you like to add to our collection? We are interested in building our collection of special items dating prior to 1990. These items are then named in recognition of the donor.
Heritage textbook collection
The jewel in the crown of our physical collection is our outstanding collection of heritage school textbooks and readers. Items date from the colonial and Federation (early 20th century) periods. The collection includes many rare items and is both representative and historically significant.
