An Le is a lifelong learner.
After graduating from university and commencing work, changes in her industry and advances in technology meant An Le was eager to further her education, which found her heading back to campus for life as an international student. This is her story.
Originally from Vietnam, a passion for learning about how companies can make smarter decisions led An Le down a new pathway. Putting full-time employment temporarily on hold, she returned to study a Master of Business Informatics as a mature-age student at the University of Canberra.
The two-year degree at the Bruce campus in the heart of Canberra aims to expand your skills in the business and information technology industries. Sitting within the Faculty of Science and Technology, An Le chose this course as a way to deepen her knowledge in this sector and further her career as a business analyst.
Prior to returning to her studies, An Le had over 10 years experience in business and was very familiar with IT products. Through her work, An Le came to understand the critical role of data analytics in making informed business decisions.
“My bachelor's degree in Industrial Fine Arts provided me with a creative approach to problem-solving. This mindset has been invaluable when tackling new challenges in the fast-paced world of business,” she shares.
“That’s why I chose to pursue a Master of Business Informatics specialising in Social Informatics at the University of Canberra. It provides the knowledge and skills I need to become an outstanding business analyst,” An Le explains. “I was particularly impressed with the faculty and research opportunities at UC. I believe the learning environment will help me grow both academically and professionally."
Choosing to return to university was no easy task for An Le. She admits it was a big challenge switching from full-time employment to being a student again. Now after almost a year in Canberra, she acknowledges it was the support from her friends, family and UC that made all the difference when settling into the city.
“UC organised several orientation sessions and extracurricular activities to help new students adjust. I appreciate how the university prioritises student well-being, both mentally and physically,” she adds.
As an international student, An Le embraced the diverse cohort of students in creating an inclusive and culturally rich atmosphere to learn and exchange ideas.
“I really enjoy UC’s multicultural learning environment. Working with students from all over the world has opened my mind and taught me so many new things,” she says.
In addition to the welcoming university community, An Le shares UC hosts many events and activities. One she particularly enjoyed was the free fresh fruit and vegetable giveaway held on campus.
“It was such a practical initiative and I hope they do it more often!”
The district of Tuggeranong just outside of Canberra’s CBD is home to a welcoming Vietnamese community with plenty of authentic restaurants, bakeries and specialty grocers to choose from. While An Le admits she hasn’t found the opportunity to fully explore the area, she is taking the time to familiarise herself with local Australian ingredients.
“Canberra is known for its peaceful, laid-back lifestyle. I mostly cook at home to save money and because it suits my family’s tastes better. I’m also keen to explore Australian ingredients to add more variety to our meals,” she shares.
“Embrace the experience and step out of your comfort zone.”
An Le admits that choosing to study anywhere in the world takes commitment, dedication and personal effort. However, surrounding yourself with the right support and like-minded individuals will help you succeed. She also notes it’s important to actively seek out and take advantage of opportunities where you can connect with your community.
“The University of Canberra equips you with the skills to be self-directed in your learning and research. Having good financial stability is crucial so you can fully engage with the UC community and make the most of your time here,” she adds.
