Karlo Espinosa Esguerra has big goals. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurial Management in the Philippines, his pursuit for higher education and entrepreneurial goals have led him to Australia, where he is currently studying a Master of Business Informatics at the University of Canberra while dreaming up his next business venture.
As a requirement to graduate from his studies back home, Karlo started a business selling water-resistant shoe covers for motorcycle riders. He quickly came to the conclusion that deepening his understanding and knowledge of technology was crucial to achieving his goals of becoming a successful business owner.
“As I continued running my business, I realised that technology has been rapidly developing, and I can use that knowledge to further improve my business or start a new business related to tech,” Karlo shares. “We were taught that businesses need to adapt in order to survive. I thought that taking up a business informatics degree would further develop my knowledge in the technology field.”
After completing his degree in the Philippines, Karlo set his sights for our nation’s capital where he began his studies in February 2024. The move has been a welcoming change to Karlo, admitting the lifestyle in Canberra is more relaxed and laid-back compared to Manila.
“Little to no traffic makes it easier to plan my commute routes to the university. The scenery is beautiful, and I often take walks to the many natural places whenever I need to step back and unwind,” he shares.
UC’s flexible schedule and welcoming community has been instrumental for Karlo to gain the most out of student life while balancing responsibilities beyond the classroom.
“The university provides a quality education and offers many services to aid students in university life. I enjoy the diversity of people in the university, from the tutors to the lecturers to the students, while learning about the different cultures of students and working alongside them,” Karlo adds.
UC’s Student Mentorship Program has provided Karlo with access to a number of student services. In particular, Karlo has sought advice on how to balance studies with his personal life - a common challenge for international students. The careers support has also helped him successfully gain employment in Canberra.
“I have landed several part-time jobs within my first six months in Canberra. Careers UC has been a big help for me because they helped improve my resume and gave me tips on expressing myself during interviews,” he says.
During his time in Australia, Karlo has also taken part in the Study Australia Industry Experience Program (SAIEP), a program connecting international students with employers through real-world industry projects to enhance his current studies and improve career prospects in the future,
“I was grouped in a team with students from different universities where we were tasked with providing market research and identifying the viability of our client to penetrate the Filipino market,” Karlo explains.
Having had to pause his business when he came to Australia, Karlo is even more determined to continue learning and growing through his studies in the business and technology space. Inspired by class projects and his specialty subject of cybersecurity, Karlo has juggled with the idea of creating programs to support small businesses or someday starting his own cybersecurity firm.
“My experience at the University of Canberra has broadened my perspective on integrating technology in business. It has inspired me to consider starting a tech-related business in the future or improving my past business with new technological solutions.
I have many goals and aspirations, but overall I believe that tech will have a huge impact on whichever route I choose,” he adds.
With a bachelor’s degree under his belt and a masters on the way, Karlo has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to getting the most out of the university experience.
“Embrace diversity and maximise the support services available at the university. Engage in campus activities and networking opportunities. Work, study, and personal life are manageable.
“Don’t forget to find time to relax as well because Canberra has a lot of beautiful scenery,” he concludes.
