It’s Canberra’s peaceful and multicultural lifestyle that makes living here such a joy for Cambodian international student, Hyzana Sok.
Struck by the beauty of nature in and around Canberra, and how well it’s preserved, she is able to enjoy city living while being immersed in nature.
We spoke to Hyzana about her journey to the Australian capital and her time studying at the University of Canberra (UC).
Hyzana is currently pursuing an alternative pathway into UC’s Law program through International Foundation Studies. The one-year full-time pathway program helps prepare international students for a degree at UC and guarantees direct entry into the first year of any UC undergraduate degree.
International Foundation Studies is run by UC College, which offers a variety of pathway programs for domestic and international students to prepare them for study success at UC. No matter your background or where you are in your education journey, UC College is here to help you thrive.
Through working with UC College, Hyzana is already on the path to realising her dream of studying law at UC.
As well as enjoying her studies and all that Canberra has to offer, Hyzana speaks highly of the support services available at UC, especially the mental health services. Though she has not needed to access counselling herself, she has seen how beneficial they are for her friends and peers.
“I have witnessed my own friends developing better ways of coping with the stresses of young adulthood,” she explains.
If you’re struggling in any way, UC’s Student Wellbeing and Support team is a great resource for all students. You can contact them via email or drop in to see someone in person at Student Central, Building 1. They are also able to direct you to other services, depending on your needs.
When it came to adjusting to her new life as an international student in Canberra, Hyzana believes finding friends is super important. In particular, she said it was great to meet like-minded people with the same hobbies and interests, and even some who spoke her native language.
Hyzana explains that she grew up in quite an international environment. For this reason, Canberra suits her really well. The city is very multicultural, with lots of people living here from all over Australia and the world.
Similarly, UC is a very multicultural and diverse university. This means that for international students, it’s easy to meet others who have similar experiences.
“I found UC and Canberra in general quite like home due to its diversity of people from different ethnicities and backgrounds – both Australian and non-Australian,” says Hyzana.
One of Hyzana’s highlights of her new life in Canberra was meeting new friends she could go out with to enjoy the city’s many sights and events. She has a great time attending Canberra’s multicultural festivals with her new friends.
For example, the National Multicultural Festival is one of Australia’s biggest celebrations of multicultural diversity. Other fantastic multicultural events in Canberra include A Taste of Ireland, Enlighten Festival, Reconciliation Day, Floriade and Canberra Nara Candle Festival.
Overall, Hyzana is loving her time at UC and looking forward to starting her Law degree. She recommends Canberra as a destination because it’s a great place to live for those who love both academic studies and nature.
“Personally, I love that UC’s campus grounds allow wildlife to roam freely. It makes for very interesting conversations with my friends living in other parts of Australia who have actually never seen a kangaroo out in the wild!”
