Abstract

Graffiti occupies a contested space within contemporary society despite the fact that informal and illicit mark-making practices have an ancient legacy. In this seminar, I will be considering graffiti as an activity and as a material trace in the context of cultural heritage and as a form of twenty-first century archaeology. My focus will be on introducing an expanded concept of graffiti, with the purpose of moving discussion beyond the ‘creative or criminal’ binary that has dominated graffiti discourse. Through a series of case studies, I will highlight the capacity of unauthorised and everyday marking activities to make and transform place, enable the public expression of emotion and raise important questions about how we assign value.

All are welcome!
