BGL Faculty Seminar: Understanding Poverty in Australia

Understanding Poverty in Australia: comparing NSW and Victoria

Profiling the demographic composition of people facing poverty is important for planning the service and constructing the appropriate policies. As there is no official poverty measure in Australia, the discussion will start from the poverty line in Australia and then using the threshold of 50% of median household disposable income, this research will derive the estimate of poverty from two sets of ABS data: the 2019-20 Survey of Income and Housing (SIH); and the 2021 Census of Population and Housing. The work will further look at the estimate for NSW and Victoria, their similarities, differences and changes from 2016 estimates. The presentation is based on the continuing works for NSW and Victoria council of social services, NCOSS and VCOSS, respectively.
