If you’re considering studying at the University of Canberra (UC) as an international student, you’re probably wondering about where you should live.
The great news is that UC is committed to ensuring that students have a supportive and comfortable place to call home. Read on to find out more about UC’s accommodation options, its accommodation guarantee and all the benefits UC offers to commencing international students. Plus, you'll get expert tips from the UC accommodation team.
To make new students’ lives as easy as possible, UC offers guaranteed accommodation to all first-year domestic and international students. This means every new student will be able to find a place to live.
UC recommends applying early to have the best chance of obtaining the room type you want. For example, UC’s studios are very popular and tend to book up quickly.
Remember that even if UC cannot offer you your first choice of room type, we will ensure that accommodation is always available for you.
UC offers accommodation both on and off campus to accommodate students with different requirements and budgets.
Some students prefer to live on campus because it offers easy access to facilities and getting to classes is quick and convenient. Other students prefer living near attractions like malls, cinemas, bars and restaurants to experience more of Canberra’s city life and enjoy a wider range of social activities and job opportunities.
“UC-enrolled international students are eligible to apply at any of those locations,” explains the accommodation team.
UC’s accommodation options have many benefits for international students.
Guaranteed accommodation takes the stress out of finding somewhere to live so you can focus on settling into Canberra and your study journey.
The UC accommodation team explained that for many students, going to university might be their first time living away from home.
“Moving into a student residence can make this transition easier,” they say.
The apartments are fully furnished, with utility bills included in the offer price. University accommodation offers easy access to study spaces, communal areas, on-site maintenance and 24/7 support. Living in university accommodation is also a great way to meet new friends!
“We have a dedicated team of staff who arrange weekly activities and events … they are also around to check on your wellbeing and to refer you for support or guidance as required.”
As well as looking after student accommodation and support needs, UC is dedicated to providing students with entertainment and social events and opportunities.
“Under UniLodge's Residential Life Program, we have something planned for our tenants almost every day. You name it – a yoga session, sporting activities, food preps, important cultural events like Christmas, Diwali and Eid, or tours to different sites – we do them all,” says the team.
They explain that UniLodge has a monthly events calendar that goes out to all tenants at the beginning of each month. Even better, most of these events are free for tenants!
“Every year, we also do a commencement ball to welcome our new tenants. The participation in this event shows that it is very popular amongst our tenants.”
If you follow these top tips, you’ll be off to a great start at UC.
“We ask you to be social, active, respectful, look after your physical and mental health and most of all, tell us if you have a worry or a concern.”
Coming to a new country and being away from home and family can be overwhelming. But, living on campus means that our team is there to support you to navigate these challenges. In your first few weeks at UC, you may feel homesick or a little anxious, but our team is here to ensure you get the best help possible.
As a new student, the best advice UC can give you is to be prepared, read all the information we send to you, and arrive ready to engage in student life!
When you arrive, make sure you book into as many orientation sessions as possible. Orientation is a great way to meet with new friends, who are just as nervous and excited as you. Try out new activities; how do you know if you don’t like something if you have never tried it?
