For international students, the journey begins with understanding the process.
From important dates to essential documents, we’re ready to break it all down for you. Here’s a comprehensive guide to make sure you understand all you need to know about the university application process.
As an international student, knowing the critical timeline for applications is important - you don’t want to miss a deadline!
Ready to start shaping your career at UC? Here's an overview of the key dates to mark in your calendar for the 2024 application season:
Application deadline
26 May 2024 for applications to begin in Semester 2, 2024.
Scholarship deadline
2 August 2024. Are you eligible? Take a look at our list of scholarships for international students.
Visa application
You'll need to apply for your student visa before the start of the semester, so aim for June to July 2024. Hot tip: make sure you don’t start your visa application until you have received confirmation of your acceptance to UC.
Research
Take the time to explore different programs at UC and their specific requirements. With practical learning opportunities in every degree, you’ll be setting yourself up for success no matter which course you choose.
Consider things such as subjects, faculty, research and work experience opportunities to find the best fit for your academic and personal goals.
Understanding the prerequisites for each program is also important. This includes any GPA or high school score requirements, standardised test scores, and any additional materials such as portfolios for arts programs.
Documentation
Gathering required documents is a crucial step in the application process - we recommend you begin early to avoid last-minute stress. Here are some essential documents commonly required:
Language proficiency
Language proficiency requirements are necessary to ensure you are getting the most out of your course. We want you to succeed, and be able to keep up with lectures, participate in tutorials, and understand your textbooks and other material.
For non-native English speakers, you will need to prove your proficiency in English through either previous study in Australia or another English speaking country, or a standardised test. We accept tests like IELTS or PTE Academic.
Plan ahead to schedule your test in time to meet application deadlines, and consider taking a course or using online practice tests to prepare.
Financial planning
Studying abroad is a unique experience and can sometimes come with a few financial challenges. Planning ahead is key - you don’t want to worry about money when you could be out enjoying beautiful Canberra and its surroundings!
The amount you spend weekly will depend on your lifestyle and preferences. Start by estimating your costs, including tuition fees, accommodation, insurance, and daily expenses. Consider using budgeting apps or spreadsheets to track your spending.
There are multiple scholarships available to international students at UC. Take a look to see if you are eligible for a scholarship, as this can help ease the financial burden of tuition.
There have been recent changes to the proof of balance requirement for anyone applying for a student visa. As of October 2023, you’ll need to show proof of $24,505 in savings.
By understanding key dates and doing some research, you can step into the next chapter of your life with confidence. And we’re here to help! If you have questions or need help with your application, get in touch with us.
