Sometimes I forget that I'm mixed race. But it's things like this that remind me of the cultural differences in my family. My parents have very different ways of showing love. I express my care similarly to my mother: affirmations of care, physical affection, and emotional counseling. My father, on the other hand, isn't fussed with many 'I love you's and compliments. Instead, he cooks for us and takes us out for meals.

'Eating Out' is a digital impressionism piece I painted of my father earlier this year. His eagerness to introduce us to the Vietnamese restaurant that serves the "bestest" pho and the long waits he and I spend waiting for roti and satay are what remind me of his care when it's hardest to see.
