Putting the WOW in wound care
Wounds can be chronic, painful and debilitating and stress has been shown to delay wound healing. An individual with a chronic wound may have to endure a number of difficult symptoms, including impaired mobility, sleep and daily functioning and the presence of exudate and odour. Quality of life is massively impacted.
UC co-developed the Wellbeing in Wounds Inventory (WOWI) with ACT Health to support the wellbeing of patients with chronic and acute wounds. Specifically developed for use with wound care patients to improve quality of life, WOWI questionnaire is a valid and reliable means of assessing a patient’s wellbeing.
This unique measure allows clinicians to identify patients with limited capacity, in order to develop suitable support and intervention packages. Wound care that focuses on the person and their wellbeing leads to better social and emotional outcomes, faster healing and a speedier return to the usual activities of daily living.
Impact
WOWI has been adopted into regular patient assessment in Canberra Health Services, ACT.
