As a student, knowing where to go on-campus for a fresh coffee, a tasty meal or some affordable study snacks is key! Luckily, UC is home to plenty of restaurants, cafés and shops on or near campus, which makes it easy to find whatever you're craving.
Read on to discover the seven best places to eat on the UC campus.
Open: Weekdays 7.30am–4.30pm
Go there for: Delicious coffee and a cosy atmosphere
If you're looking for a relaxed setting and great food, Mizzuna is the place for you. Get there before 11.30am to indulge in one of their many breakfast options. Miz's Morning Burger - with bacon, two fried eggs, cheese and a hashbrown - is the perfect start to a long day in the library.
Mizzuna has a fantastic all-day menu too, which makes it a great spot to grab lunch with a friend or refuel between classes.
Open: weekdays 11am–8.30pm
Go there for: Hearty Asian fare
In need of a wholesome meal? You can't go past Yin & Yum Asian Fusion Restaurant. Serving delicious Asian-style dishes, Yin & Yum is the place to go for a filling dinner at a reasonable price, which is great news for your student budget.
A steaming bowl of their laksa will warm you up on those cold winter days for just $16. They also offer many popular noodle and rice dishes, all for under $20.
Open: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11am–1pm
Go there for: All your grocery essentials
If your cupboards look a little bare, it might be time to head to the UCX Food Pantry. Each week, UC students have 10 points to use at this handy store, where you can stock up on staples like canned foods, dried noodles and long-life milk.
You can even use your points to get other household essentials, like personal care products and laundry detergent. Try to get there on Thursday, when OzHarvest delivers a range of fresh fruit and veggies.
Open: Weekdays 7.30am–3.30pm
Go there for: A latte and filling lunches
Whether you're looking for a caffeine boost or some tasty food, you'll find it at The Coffee Grounds. Located right near the library, this is the perfect place to get that pre-study caffeine.
The Coffee Grounds offers a great menu, including all-day breakfast options available until 2pm. You can also grab a chicken parmi for just $18. This is an Australian classic, and a must-try for international students! Or, try something new with their $14 veggie tacos, featuring spiced cauliflower and Kewpie mayo.
Open: Weekdays 9am–5pm
Go there for: Breakfast on-the-go
When you're in need of a wholesome meal, you can’t go past Retro Café. Offering loads of breakfast, lunch and coffee options, this humble café has become an institution for UC staff and students alike.
Retro Café is known for generous serving sizes, so you'll never leave hungry! For a filling snack, pick up a cheese and tomato croissant for $7.80.
Go there for: Snacks and home essentials
If you’re running low on household basics, UC’s on-campus Asian Grocery is the place to go. Centrally located at Cooper Lodge, you can find this hidden gem next door to The Coffee Grounds on Telita Street.
Here, you’ll find a great range of necessities and imported goods. They also stock plenty of tasty snacks from overseas, including chips (or crisps), lollies (or sweets) and ice creams, which will be sure to power you through your next exam revision session.
Open: Weekdays 7am–4pm, weekends 7.30am–4pm
Go there for: Baked goods and take-home treats
With a diverse menu of dishes from the Mediterranean and beyond, you won't want to miss a visit to Oscar's Bakery Café for breakfast or lunch. What's more, Oscar's also offers a range of delicious pastries, which are the perfect accompaniment for your morning coffee.
You can even take the taste of Oscar's home with you with their bake-at-home meals, including their delectable chicken pide for $16 or a whole lasagne for just $18. Taking these home and freezing them for the future means you will always have dinner available if you don’t have time to cook, which is very helpful in the busy life of a student!
Hungry for more? This is just the start! As you continue to familiarise yourself with the UC campus, you’ll discover more places to eat, like the Refectory Eateries or the UCBarx - a popular spot to share a pizza and drinks with friends.
Happy exploring!
