Culture and Creativity Seminar – Graffiti, Heritage and Vernacular Place-Making

Speaker: Dr. Ursula K. Frederick Date\Time: Thursday 5 September 2024, 12.30-1:30pmLocation: Building 1 Level A Room 1A21, University of Canberra (NB Room 1a21 is accessed from the foyer joining Building 1 and Mizzuna café); or Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/99670794725AbstractGraffiti occupies a contested space within contemporary society despite the fact that informal and illicit mark-making practices have an ancient legacy. In this seminar, I will be considering graffiti as an activity and as a material trace in the context of cultural heritage and as a form of twenty-first century archaeology. My focus will be on introducing an expanded concept of graffiti, with the purpose of moving discussion beyond the ‘creative or criminal’ binary that has dominated graffiti discourse. Through a series of case studies, I will highlight the capacity of unauthorised and everyday marking activities to make and transform place, enable the public expression of emotion and raise important questions about how we assign value. All are welcome!BioDr Ursula K. Frederick is a creative practice researcher, archaeologist and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research, University of Canberra. Ursula is CI on the ARC-funded project ‘Archives in Bark’ project, a study of culturally modified boab trees in the Kimberley. One of Ursula’s key research interests concerns how people (past and present) express their relationships to identity, culture, place and time through inscription and mark-making practices (including rock art, carved trees and graffiti). Ursula regularly exhibits her own artwork and publishes in a variety of scholarly and public forums. The Culture and Creativity Seminar Series is hosted by the Centre for Cultural and Creative Research (CCCR), Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra. Culture and Creativity Seminar – The Materialisation of Testament: An Artistic Response to a Truth-Telling Royal Commission

Speaker: Kerry MartinDate\Time: Thursday 12 September 2024, 12:30-13:30Location: Building 1 Level A Room 1A21, University of Canberra (NB Room 1a21 is accessed from the foyer joining Building 1 and Mizzuna café); or Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/97497583741AbstractRoyal Commissions are increasingly seen as a powerful forum for truth-telling, providing an important public mechanism for the examination of difficult issues.Based on the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (2012-2017) this seminar examines the role of art in responding to commissions of inquiry, and how it can provide a platform for ongoing conversations about what are often challenging and traumatic topics. It explores the artist/researcher’s approach to the use of a reparative aesthetic (an approach to art making designed to make gentle but powerful statements about shameful events), the artist as witness trauma that is not their own, and the use of beauty as a legitimate strategy or entry-point into violent, shameful and difficult topics. All are welcome!BioKerry Martin is a visual artist in the final stages of a creative practice PhD at the University of Canberra’s Centre for Creative and Cultural Research. Her practice is motivated by the logic of a reparative aesthetic, an approach aimed to hold the viewer’s attention on the difficult subjects she explores. Martin works primarily with textile techniques. Her work focuses on manual methods, and she frequently employs the slow, repetitive process of hand stitching as a fundamental element of her work. She consistently examines questions relating to the human condition and areas of social injustice.  She is interested in how beauty, text, the repetition of mark-making, and the multiplicity of display can be an impactful form of bearing witness. This research is supported and funded by an Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship. The Culture and Creativity Seminar Series is hosted by the Centre for Cultural and Creative Research (CCCR), Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra. Middle Kids

There is a question at the heart of Faith Crisis Pt 1, the third album from Sydney’s emotive indie trio Middle Kids. Over 13 propulsive, ecstatic and gorgeous tracks, songwriter and vocalist Hannah Joy attempts to tease out the question of belief; the breaking of it, and how it is rebuilt. Co-produced by Tim Fitz and Jonathan Gilmore (The 1975, Beabadoobee), Joy and bandmates Fitz and Harry Day masterfully express the sensation of being overwhelmed, swept up and dragged down in songs that exalt and lift you higher.Featuring a collaboration with Gang of Youths frontman Dave Le’aupepe, Faith Crisis Pt 1 is brimming with yearning, angst, pop brightness, belief in love and reassurance that even from the bottom, it’s possible to believe in beautiful things. Middle Kids‘ last album Today We’re The Greatest won Best Rock Album at the 2021 ARIA Awards. Released at the height of the pandemic, the album garnered the band several US TV show performances including Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and The Late, Late Show with James Cordon.Middle Kids first gained attention in 2017 with their debut single, ‘Edge Of Town’ and their debut album, Lost Friends, which won Triple J’s Best Australian Album Award in 2018. The success of their albums has also earned the band an international touring profile which has included supporting shows with the likes of Bloc Party, Kings of Leon, War on Drugs and Cold War Kids and festivals such as The Governors Ball, Lollapalooza, Osheaga Festival and many more.
