This course will introduce the theory and practice of the preservation and conservation of historic photographic materials. Topics covered will include the identification of a wide range of photographic process types from Daguerreotypes to Digital. The emphasis of the course will be on understanding photographic materials from a chemical and technological point of view, the preservation of photographic collections, and simple conservation treatment methods.

This is a two-day course, and participants are encouraged to enrol for both days. This course follows directly after Part One and Part Two of the Preserving Paper Collections Short Course, should participants be interested in attending both courses.

Learning outcomes

  • Develop a basic understanding of the variety of photographic images including black and white, colour and some digital materials on plastic, paper and glass supports.
  • Receive an introduction to photographic conservation practice including surface cleaning, simple repair techniques and simple auxiliary support removal.

Cheryl Jackson

Conservator of Photographic Materials

Cheryl Jackson has been a professional Conservator of Photographic Materials for 37 years and is one of the most senior Photographic Conservators in Australia. She has undertaken advanced training in Photographic Conservation, specialising in colour and digital materials and regularly lectures in Photographic Conservation at University level. Cheryl has extensive experience in Paper Conservation, Preventive Conservation and Disaster Preparedness and Response, as well as Photographic Materials. Cheryl was a recipient of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials Medal in 2023.

Course structure

Session 1
  • Understanding photographic materials. This session will introduce participants to the science behind photographic images and their materiality.
Session 2
  • Identifying photographic processes. Here participants will be introduced to a wide range of photographic process types. They will be able to see, touch and examine all of the process types via Cheryl’s extensive study collection.
Session 3
  • Surface cleaning. What can and cannot be achieved safely when dealing with thin, old, fragile photographic image layers.
Session 4
  • Auxiliary supports. Removing photographs from self-adhesive albums, poor quality back boards and what to replace them with.
