About the course

This unit develops students' understanding of material properties and characteristics. It introduces the students to simple structures, their design, construction, structural and environmental characteristics. Students will gain an awareness of Australian standards and codes.

Who should apply for this course

Construction practitioners, with a priority given to female applicants.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course "Structures and Materials 1," students will understand the fundamental principles of structural loads, forces, and materials, including timber and concrete, and be able to design and analyze beams, spanning structures, columns, bracing, and trusses.

Nasrin Taghavi

Nasrin Taghavi is an accomplished civil and environmental engineer. With six years of experience in the civil engineering industry, four years as a research fellow, and teaching positions at UNSW Canberra and the University of Canberra, Nasrin possesses a thorough understanding of structural principles, civil engineering, and environmental engineering.

Course structure

Session 1

Loads and forces & introduction to timber as a structural material

  • What is the difference between Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement to Country?
  • How can I use Acknowledgement in the classroom?
  • What is the role of story in engaging with Indigenous cultures?
Session 2

Beams and spanning structures

    This session will provide teachers with supportive ideas for working with Indigenous students through the concept of perspectives. Storying will be explored as sitting at the heart of identity and as a form of knowledge transmission. Teachers will be encouraged to participate in storying practices and to take this knowledge back to their school setting.
Session 3
