About the course

Students will learn how BIM is useful in supporting investment decision-making related to capital works and infrastructure; how BIM can assist in comparing alternative solutions to design, energy and environmental services, and build method; how BIM can assist with design visualisation for the client; how BIM can assist in the identification of building issues and clashes including quality assurance and safety; and how BIM data can be used to manage the completed facility through to the end of its useful life.

The unit includes learning by critical evaluation, knowledge transfer, advanced technical analysis and experiential case studies.

Who should apply for this course

Construction practitioners, with a priority given to female applicants.

Learning outcomes

  • Construct a model through the application of advanced knowledge of the principles and technical skills of construction modelling
  • Assess the significant principles of BIM-modelling to a construction project on the basis of architectural and engineering drawing.

Apeesada Sompolgrunk (Mins)

Apeesada (Mins) Sompolgrunk is a PhD candidate at the University of Canberra, specialising in optimising Building Information Modelling (BIM) for construction management in small to medium-sized construction firms. Beyond his scholarly pursuits, he has delivered hands-on guidance in building information modelling and management principles and the adept utilisation of premier software platforms from industry leaders including Autodesk and Bentley Systems.

Session 1

BIM vs CAD: What is BIM and Why is it important?

  • What is the difference between Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement to Country?
  • How can I use Acknowledgement in the classroom?
  • What is the role of story in engaging with Indigenous cultures?
Session 2

BIM foundation: Concepts and Terminologies

    This session will provide teachers with supportive ideas for working with Indigenous students through the concept of perspectives. Storying will be explored as sitting at the heart of identity and as a form of knowledge transmission. Teachers will be encouraged to participate in storying practices and to take this knowledge back to their school setting.
Session 3

BIM implementation 1: Technologies, policies, and standards

    This session will provide teachers with supportive ideas for working with Indigenous students through the concept of perspectives. Storying will be explored as sitting at the heart of identity and as a form of knowledge transmission. Teachers will be encouraged to participate in storying practices and to take this knowledge back to their school setting.
Session 4

BIM implementation 2: Roles and responsibilities

    This session will provide teachers with supportive ideas for working with Indigenous students through the concept of perspectives.
