As a former Executive Dean of the University’s Faculty of Arts and Design (FAD), he left an indelible mark on the Faculty itself, as well as the University more broadly.

In addition to Professor Bonollo’s tenure as Executive Dean of FAD, his leadership extended to roles as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Industrial Design, and Director of the Design Research and Development Group.

“His sudden departure is a great blow to our Faculty, and we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable individual,” said Professor Julian Knowles, Executive Dean of FAD.

Prior to joining the University of Canberra, Professor Bonollo was Professor and Foundation Director of the Centre for Industrial Design at Monash University, and developed the Industrial Design degrees at RMIT and Monash University.

His achievements and contributions were widely recognised. He was the Vice-President of the Industrial Design Council of Australia, Victoria in 1982, and Foundation Co-Director at the National Institute of Design in 1977.

In 2008, he was conferred the title of Cavaliere by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, for his collaborative international design work.

Professor Bonollo was a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore and at Ubon Ratchathani University Thailand. His book Product Design: A Course in First Principles was ranked by the International Book Authority as one of the best 100 books on design of all times in 2020.

An award-winning amateur beekeeper and environmentalist himself, Professor Bonollo co-created a patented beehive frame with Assistant Professor Dr Eddi Pianca, which became the University’s first sale of intellectual property.

“Professor Bonollo was a visionary in design and a mentor and source of inspiration for many. He was generous with his time, and his knowledge extended beyond his students to his colleagues – he embodied a spirit of collaboration and support,” said colleague and friend Dr Pianca.

On 19 June 2024, his distinguished career culminated in his receipt of the Order of Australia for his exceptional service to the field of design.

“His passion for design and dedication to teaching were evident in everything he did, and his impact on those who had the privilege to work with him is immeasurable,” said Professor Knowles.

Reflecting on Professor Bonollo’s remarkable legacy and his profound influence on the University’s Faculty of Arts and Design, and the design community at large, Professor Knowles said that he will be remembered for his commitment to excellence and his mentorship. His unwavering dedication to the advancement of design will continue to inspire all.

The University of Canberra extends heartfelt condolences to Professor Bonollo’s family, friends and loved ones.
