2,000 graduates become UC alumni in March graduations

31 March 2023: Almost 2,000 new graduates became University of Canberra alumni this week, after walking across the stage in the March round of the University’s graduation ceremonies.

The cohort – many of whom navigated COVID-19 lockdowns and online learning during their time studying – became alumni at the ceremonies held at the National Convention Centre in Canberra.

Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Paddy Nixon said the group has proven their resilience throughout their studies.

“The last few years has been like nothing we have ever seen, but we have learnt so much from our ever-changing environment and the world around us,” he said.

Through their resilience, graduates received their degrees from all five of the University’s faculties. Professor Nixon said each graduate should be proud of their perseverance.

“I hope you will look back on your time at this unique University as a period of exceptional learning — both inside and outside the classroom,” he said.

The March graduation round also saw the first eight graduates from the Graduate Certificate in Public Policy receive their credentials.

The course, which is delivered fully online in partnership with Keypath, was introduced in 2022.

Program Director Associate Professor Riyana Miranti said the students performed well throughout the course.

“During their time in the course, students learnt to analyse complex issues surrounding public policy, communicate approaches, interpret data, and achieve equitable outcomes in policy development,” Associate Professor Miranti said.

“They were also required to demonstrate understanding of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s identity and lived experiences within historical and contemporary policy contexts.”
