13 April 2017: The University of Canberra hosted its graduation ceremonies in the Great Hall at Parliament House from 11-13 April, with more than 2,400 students receiving their degrees in eight ceremonies.
Students graduated ready for careers in law, software engineering, science, education, graphic design, midwifery, sports studies and more. The University also celebrated its first cohort of Bachelor of Physiotherapy and Bachelor of Pharmacy graduates.
Students included Paralympian Evan O’Hanlon, who graduated with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture on 12 April. Mr O’Hanlon, who has cerebral palsy, has represented Australia at three Paralympics. He won gold in the T38 category of the 100m and 200m in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, and a silver medal in the T38 100m in Rio.
University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Deep Saini congratulated the students on their success.
“Our greatest source of pride comes from one asset which matters more than any other— our students and graduates,” Professor Saini said. “We are justly proud of our 79,000 plus alumni and hope that you will always consider yourself part of the University of Canberra.”
Staff members were also among those collecting their degrees at Parliament House. Dr Bilquis Ara, Dr Monica Carroll, Dr Jane Kellett, Dr Cathy Knight-Agarwal and Dr Scott Bridges graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy, while Dr Jane Frost graduated with a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner.
Another 16 staff also graduated in areas including business administration, professional writing, education, nursing, design and applied science.
