Education museum at UC wins grant

27 November 2015: The Australian National Museum of Education (ANME), located on the University of Canberra's Bruce campus, has been awarded a Community Heritage Grant.

The grant, worth $4500, was awarded by the National Library of Australia to assist in the identification and preservation of the museum's collection.

ANME director Malcolm Beazley AM said the grant will be used to engage a professionally qualified consultant to undertake a significance assessment of the museum's collection.

"With more than 10,000 items, including books, school ephemera and objects, many from the 19th century, we are well placed for an exciting outcome from the assessment, which will allow us to apply for other highly competitive grants," he said.

"The museum's collection is impressive and attracts many visitors both from Australia and overseas but a significance assessment is imperative to confirm this."

ANME curator Hakim Abdul Rahim also attended an intensive three-day preservation and collection management workshop as part of the grant, which was held at the National Library, the National Archives, the National Museum and the National Film and Sound Archive.

He said the workshops will prove to be highly valuable with his work at the museum.

"While the grant provided some funds, the workshop offered the expertise to help us protect our collection and make it accessible for both residents and visitors to our nation's capital," he said.

The Community Heritage Grants are funded by the Australian Government through the Ministry of Arts.
