High school students check out UC

Vanessa Lam

1 May 2015: More than 160 high school students from across the ACT and regional NSW visited the University of Canberra last month for the UC 4 Yourself Experience Day.

Hosted by the Widening Participation team, the Year 9 and 10 students from Campbell High School, Namadgi School, Calwell High School, Hawker College, Melba Copland Secondary School, Narooma High School and Moruya High School attended the day held on 19 March.

Now in its third year, the UC 4 Yourself Experience Day gives students from financially disadvantaged, regional and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds the chance to experience a university environment first-hand.

"Events like this are a fantastic opportunity for students who might not have considered pursing higher education, to see what being a university student might be like for them," Widening Participation senior outreach and project officer, Rebecca Mason said.

Students spoke to University staff about the wide range of courses on offer, took part in faculty workshops including a realistic war game with former Chief and Army and director of the National Security Institute at the University of Canberra Peter Leahy, toured student accommodation and explored the campus through a scavenger hunt.

An expo in the refectory also included interactive demonstrations by staff and students, a gaming station, DJ and faculty stalls.

The next UC 4 Yourself Experience Days will be held on 17-18 June and 25-26 November.
