Filipino nursing students visit UC

Vanessa Lam

1 July 2015: The University of Canberra recently welcomed 12 nursing students from the University of Santo Tomas College of Nursing (UST) in the Philippines, as part of a three-day visit to experience Australian nursing education.

During a tour of the University's nursing clinical labs on 2-4 June, students took part in practical simulations including monitoring a manikin patient and taking bloods.

UST nursing lecturer Elizabeth Cortez said it was a fantastic experience for students.

"We are very grateful to be able to take part in the practical simulations, the University of Canberra has so many resources and technology available for students during their study," Professor Cortez said.

It's the first time the students have visited Australia.

UST nursing lecturer Genecar Pe Benito added that trips like these are important for students as it provides them with a different perspective on how healthcare is delivered in a different culture.

The students also met with nursing staff and students who discussed the University's research, development of healthcare and what Australian nursing education is like.

"We've learnt about the differences between Filipino and Australian culture and we can apply the lessons we have learnt here to our study back home," UST student Angela Buensalida said.

Fellow student Augustine Cortez said she was impressed with how student centred the University is.

"It's very different from how our university works back in the Philippines.  Here you're very encouraged to take the initiative to study through different pathways, instead of the traditional approach to education and for me that's really nice," she said.
