Queen Mother of Bhutan visits UC

3 November 2014: Her Majesty, Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, Queen Mother of Bhutan visited the University of Canberra and met students from Bhutan during a royal visit to campus last week.

The event was organised by the Australian Himalayan Foundation (AHF) with students performing a traditional dance to welcome the Queen Mother to the University of Canberra.

Her Majesty visited Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra as patron of the AHF's Girls' Education Program which works closely with her own charitable organisation RENEW, to support girls' education in Bhutan.

Her Majesty and her delegation including His Excellency, Kesang Wangdi, Ambassador for Bhutan, were officially welcomed to the University by Chancellor Dr Tom Calma AO, then enjoyed a morning tea with staff and students.

There are currently 132 Bhutanese students studying at the University of Canberra making them the fourth most represented international cohort after China, India and Vietnam.

Last year, 78 students from Bhutan graduated from the University from a range of disciplines including law, IT, business administration and marketing.
