UC College's English Language Centre welcomed students from Japan

15 March 2016: The University of Canberra College continued a decade-long tradition of hosting visiting students from a Japanese University this month.

Groups of students from Aichi Shukutoku University (ASU) have visited the University of Canberra College campus each year to partake in the College's Special English Programs at the English Language Centre.

For the majority of the visiting students, it was their first time in Australia.

"We are really enjoying Australia but it is very hot here and the sun is strong," said Misaki Kawamoto.

The students stayed for three weeks and during their stay they took English classes and went sightseeing around Canberra.

"Our English has improved a great deal since being in Australia, and we've had many conversations with our homestay families in English," said Miho Tzutsui.

The group also visited the Japanese Gardens and Japanese War Cemetery in Cowra, as well as the National Museum of Australia and the Gold Creek Sheep Station.

"We loved Gold Creek Station; trying to catch a sheep was difficult but a great experience and one of our favourite parts of our trip," said Megumi Kiwata.

"The kangaroos are so cute and the cockatoos are very loud when they screech."

The group had an educational farewell where they got to speak about what they experienced in Australia.

Special English Programs at the College are customised English courses and study tours for professional and student groups who want to experience Australian culture and study English at the same time.

The Programs are an integral part of the English Language Centre and the University as a whole as they not only open up opportunities for students to learn English and explore Australian culture but also for international business partnerships to grow.
