UC expanding its reach into capital region through partnership with Poplars Development

30 April 2021: The University of Canberra is the first educational institution to have entered into a partnership with Poplars Developments and Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC), which will see the University’s reach into the capital region expand with a focus on innovation, research and access to education beyond its Bruce Campus.

Located in Jerrabomberra, Poplars Development is pioneering the perfect environment for the future of innovation in the region. Master planned into four precincts, the development will cluster and connect industry, research, learning and retail in one integrated development.

The multifaceted development will provide opportunities for students and researchers to access leading national and international companies as well as to undertake studies on the built form and natural environment in particular the surrounding Poplars Grassland conservation area.

The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Poplars and QPRC to explore a range of educational partnership opportunities. Opportunities that will include student mentoring, internships and research opportunities associated with key UC study areas, co-funded PhDs and academic research to support tenants’ business needs, the provision of allied health services, research and rehabilitation opportunities for elite athletes and defence personnel and provide assistance to foster relationships with key contacts in relation to the new Jerrabomberra High School and current primary school within the development.

“This partnership enhances the University’s offerings to our students, staff and external stakeholders and will enhance our research capabilities.  Those living within the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council area with have access to our services on their doorstep,” said Professor Leigh Sullivan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation. “At the same time, it provides new linkages and opportunities for our students and researchers with the global businesses located in the Poplars Innovation Precinct who are looking to engage skilled staff.”

“We are excited to work with Poplars and QPRC on developing future collaborations within this expansive development that will explore concepts capable of changing the future of the Capital region.”

“Since 2013, it has been our vision to see Poplars bring together community, business, research and education to support innovation and job creation within the Capital Region” said Poplars Co-owner David Maxwell. “We are thrilled to announce this trilateral memorandum of understanding between Poplars, QPRC and the University of Canberra. Not only will it strengthen educational and research outcomes for the region, it will provide unique connections and access for businesses within the Poplars Innovation Precinct.

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tim Overall was excited at the prospects that the partnership presents for the community.

“In March, the NSW Government declared South Jerrabomberra and Poplars as one of four Regional Jobs Precincts.

“As a Regional Jobs Precinct, specialist planners will be assigned to work with Council to help refine processes to fast-track the ability to collaborate with different parts of government to create new jobs and enable industries to expand in the region.

“This valuable partnership between the University of Canberra, Poplars and Council help bring us closer to the vision of a precinct that focuses on defence, space, cyber-security, information technology and scientific research sectors.

“It’s an ideal location for a partnership of this nature to flourish and deliver fantastic educational outcomes,” Mayor Overall said.
