Facing the facts and figures of overtraining syndrome

29 April 2019: Internationally-renowned physiologist Professor Romain Meeusen will be exploring the realities of overtraining syndrome (OTS) in a public lecture at the University of Canberra on 1 May 2019.

OTS is a complex condition which results from prolonged and excessive training stresses combined with inadequate recovery; it can result in chronic fatigue, poor performance and increased vulnerability to infections, and affects a large percentage of athletes.

Professor Meeusen is a well-published, internationally-renowned expert on the subject.

He is the Vice-Rector Internationalisation Policy and Head of the Human Physiology Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium. As Director of the Human Performance Lab at the VUB, he works with several top athletes.

Professor Meeusen teaches exercise physiology, training and coaching, and sports physiotherapy.

His primary research focuses on the roles played by exercise and the brain, in relation to health and disease, exploring the influence of neurotransmitters on human performance, training and rehabilitation.

Most recently, he has worked on thermoregulation (by which the body maintains its core internal temperature), neurogenesis (the production of nervous system cells, or neurons), cognition, and nutrition in health and disease.

Professor Meeusen is a past President of the Belgian Society of Kinesiology and the Belgian Federation of Sports Physiotherapy, and a former Board member of the European College of Sport Science ECSS (2000–2013), and the American College of Sports Medicine (2010–2013).

The Overtraining Syndrome – Facts and Figures is the first event in a series leading up to the ActiveBrain 2020 conference, to be held by the University of Canberra and the Australian Institute of Sport from 19 to 21 May, 2020.

The conference will focus on how physical activity affects the brain – and vice versa – with a view towards optimising health and performance. Call for abstracts opens on 30 August 2019, and registration opens in October 2019.

WHAT: The Overtraining Syndrome – Facts and Figures (public lecture)

WHEN: 1 May 2019, 12.30–1.30pm

Professor Romain Meeusen is available for interview, between 1 and 3 May 2019.
