UC’s eggceptional eggsperts have Easter in the basket

23 March 2018: Whatever knowledge you’re hunting this Easter, the University of Canberra has experts to satisfy your hunger.

Eggs and our health

Are you or someone you know guilty of overeating at Easter? It’s a tempting time of year for it – all that chocolatey goodness! But have you ever stopped to really consider the effects of gorging? Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics Dr Michelle Minehan (0479 047 729) says that overindulging at Easter isn’t problematic – if you’re smart about it. And she has some tips on how to be.

How to manage stress, conflict and body image issues

Assistant Professor in Psychology Dr Vivienne Lewis (0411 801 556) can discuss the consequences that feasting over the holiday period can have on those whose eating habits are problematic, particularly in relation to body image. Dr Lewis can also talk about managing stress and family conflict, and how best to manage your mental health over Easter.

Marketing in the digital age

The rise of online marketplace and hospitality service Airbnb means travellers are rarely short on accommodation options, with many now opting for the convenience of a private residence as opposed to a hotel. This has forced traditional accommodation providers to reconsider how they “sell” themselves, while also heightening the importance of online reviews in consumers’ decision-making. Associate Professor of Marketing Dr Raechel Johns (0411 802 274), whose research spans technology-driven service delivery and marketing, among other topics, can explain why hotels and tourism attractions must be focused on offering an excellent product now more than ever to remain relevant.

The art of chocolate-making

The shapes and sizes of chocolate eggs can be as varied as the different flavours they come in. But have you ever stopped to wonder how Easter eggs are made? Dr Nenad Naumovski (0452 466 409), an Assistant Professor in Food Science and Human Nutrition, can talk about the preparation, modification and composition of chocolate and chocolate-related products.

Destination: Canberra

The University’s tourism expert, Dr Naomi Dale (0400 967 860), can discuss why Canberra’s long list of attractions and its international readiness makes it a destination worth exploring for locals, interstaters and international visitors.

Easter and the economy

Holiday periods and spending sprees often go hand in hand and Easter is no exception. University of Canberra economics expert Professor Phil Lewis (0400 479 147) can discuss Australians’ spending habits and the impact holiday periods have on businesses and the economy.

Shopping centres (briefly) regain relevance

Gift giving – albeit in chocolate form – is as synonymous with Easter as it is with Christmas which is good news for traditional retailers, according to the University’s expert on shopping centres, Associate Professor Dr Lisa Scharoun (0403 017 994). Dr Scharoun says although shopping centres have taken a battering in their fight against online shopping, consumers tend to return to brick and mortar businesses to sate their appetite for sweet treats at Easter.
