Researchers turn thesis into three-minute presentation

29 August 2018: Some of the brightest researchers from the University of Canberra will present their thesis to a live audience and a panel of judges at this year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

Competitors must explain their research and convince the audience of its significance, in strictly three minutes, for a chance to win the $2000 prize. The people’s choice award, worth $500, will also be on offer on the night.

Presentation topics this year include the relationship between families of deceased organ donors and transplant recipients, the use of raspberry leaf tea to help childbirth, and how online media is changing the interdependent relationship between advertisers, the media and the audience.

  • Select competitors will be available for interview and photo/filming opportunities between 11am and 11.30am on Thursday 30 August at Café Mizzuna on campus

Sean Dicks is a part-time PhD candidate at the University and will discuss the bereavement process families of potential organ donors are likely to go through.

“I am conducting a longitudinal case study exploring the experiences of families from the time at the hospital where their relative died until about one year after the death,” Mr Dicks said.

“My interest is in how we can best deliver bereavement-related care during their time at the hospital and thereafter, regardless of their decision.”

Rebekah Bowman, a lecturer in midwifery, will discuss the use of raspberry leaf tea during pregnancy.

“Women and midwives have been using raspberry leaf to help childbirth since the 6th century,” Ms Bowman said.

“Despite this historical use that still exists today, there is no clinical evidence for its efficacy or safety. This research aims to provide women and midwives with answers to inform their decision-making.”
