Lemon zesters and folding bicycle car racks on show in UC grad showcase

17 November 2016: A bicycle car rack that folds into a chair and innovative multi-function kitchen appliances are among some of the students’ work that will be on display at the 2016 University of Canberra Faculty of Arts and Design Graduate Showcase on 18 November.

The annual event will feature graduating students’ work from architecture, interior architecture, industrial design and graphic design courses, as well as displays from students in media arts, web design and creative writing, among other disciplines.

This year, budding industrial designers developed dual-use kitchen appliances to simplify cooking at home with a lemon zester that doubles as a container among the highlights.

Another graduate encapsulated Australians’ love of camping by incorporating a folding chair into a bicycle car rack for a furniture design project.

University of Canberra dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design Professor Lyndon Anderson said the showcase highlights the diversity of the faculty’s graduating students and their work.

“I’m incredibly proud of our students and the work they have completed this year,” Professor Anderson said.

“The high-quality design pieces our students have produced suggest they are going to thrive as creative practitioners when they enter the workforce.”

In addition to the students’ work on display, a series of awards will be presented on the night.

The student with the most support for their project, as voted on by members of the public, will receive a $500 grant to assist them in launching their creative career, while the best performing students from each discipline will also be recognised.

In previous years, the end-of-year showcase has focused on the University’s design and architecture graduates. This year marks the first time students from every discipline in the Faculty of Arts and Design will present their work.

“The end-of-year showcase is always a fantastic occasion and this year’s faculty-wide event is our biggest celebration yet,” Professor Anderson said.

“We’re looking forward to a memorable evening with industry professionals, staff, students and their family and friends.”
