Kittens, lambs and ducklings help UC students de-stress

9 May 2016: University of Canberra students can cuddle a kitten and visit a petting zoo as part of Stress Less week that starts TODAY.

Designed to help students de-stress ahead of exams the following week, a number of activities have been organised by UC Life! including a petting zoo, a kitten cuddle day, a lolly trolley and bubble machine.

The exam period can be a taxing time for students, so University of Canberra experts are also reminding students of the stress-busting benefits of exercise, and how to cope with the pressure to perform, likening exam preparation to how elite athletes prepare for a big race.

“Moderate intensity exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which may be advantageous prior to an exam. This could be anything from a brisk walk to a light jog, cycling or resistance training,” associate professor in exercise physiology and sports nutrition Dr Kate Pumpa said.

She also recommends eating nutritious food regularly such as fresh fruit, vegetables and good quality protein and try not to rely on high fat take-away foods.

Stretching can also help you relax and clear your mind. Assistant professor of exercise physiology Lennon Wicks said simple stretches can help students remain focused before they put pen to paper.

“Stretching is a great way to help you relax and loosen tight muscles – these little mini breaks allow you to refocus your mind,” he said.

When it comes to handling nerves on the big day, sports psychologist Dr Richard Keegan said those pre-exam butterflies can actually be a good thing.

“Many elite athletes see nerves as ‘good I’m ready’, but confidence also comes from knowing you have prepared well. So write down your goals, make a schedule to keep you on track and map out your progress,” he said.
