Time to stop politicking around climate change: John Hewson at UC lecture

9 February 2016: Australian economic expert and former Liberal Party and Opposition Leader, Dr John Hewson AM will discuss how technology and innovation can answer the climate challenge at this year's University of Canberra Krebs Lecture.

Dr Hewson has previously accused Australian governments – from both major parties – of playing short-term politics and delaying addressing the climate change challenge.

"We've lost time and business opportunities because of the politicking around the issue. The battle of ideas hasn't worked to produce a strategy that is supported across the board," Dr Hewson said.

"I am confident that we can make up for that lost time and there is still a role for Australia at the forefront of transitioning to a low carbon society."

Dr Hewson has been discussing the issue of climate change for many years and presently chairs the Asset Owners Disclosure Project that surveys, rates and ranks the world's largest asset owners on their management of climate risk.

"Australia has considerable strength in innovation among industry, universities and research organisations, and the challenge of climate change is not beyond us," he said.

"In the coming years, as the world steps up its response to this challenge, we can still emerge as a world leader in the development and delivery of technology to curb the most serious impacts of climate change.

"A technological revolution is needed to provide the foundation for climate adaptation and mitigation and many of our brightest minds are already committed to making it a reality," Dr Hewson said.

The University of Canberra Institute for Applied Ecology's annual Krebs Lecture is dedicated to Professor Charles Krebs for his extraordinary contribution to our understanding and appreciation of our natural world.

Past speakers include former Environment and Education Minister Peter Garrett AM, Senator for Tasmania and leader of the Greens, Dr Bob Brown, and internationally renowned environmentalist and author Professor Tim Flannery.
