UC develops innovative new journalism program

10 September 2015: Journalism graduates from the University of Canberra will soon be better-equipped to meet the rapidly changing job market thanks to a new series of specialised streams in the Bachelor of Journalism degree.

Commencing in 2016, the degree will offer three specialised streams designed to prepare graduates for specific professional career paths: content marketing, social and digital campaigning [both world-first] and creative writing.

Head of discipline and professor of journalism Matthew Ricketson said employers increasingly want graduates who can create strategic, feature-rich, dynamic content that can be published in a multi-platform media environment.

"Journalism has changed," Professor Ricketson said. "Although it will always begin in the newsroom, it now extends well beyond it into companies, government, and not-for-profit organisations, among others.

"We work with students to prepare them for careers in industries where innovation is central. Employers have told us they want the reliability of a journalism graduate with skills in new media, who demonstrates commercial awareness and knows how to operate in an ever-changing media market."

Content marketing, he said, is one of the fastest growing areas of professional communication and the University aims to provide students with the skills needed to hit the ground running in this field.

"There is a growing role within business and government for commercial messaging in the contemporary media market and we'll be making sure our graduates are skilled and ready for these jobs of the future," he said.

"These streams will focus on multi-platform journalism and content creation, delivering social change via media skills and writing in a range of story-telling forms."

Professor Ricketson is available for interview.
