Delaying action on climate change “a crime against humanity,” Peter Garrett argues in UC lecture

24 February 2015: Environmental advocate, former Federal Environment Minister and Midnight Oil frontman, the Hon Peter Garrett AM will present five simple steps which we can take to save the hand that feeds us -- our planet, at a sold-out University of Canberra lecture TONIGHT.

Addressing the issue of climate change, Mr Garrett will outline how Australia's high standard of living and rich biodiversity means we have much to lose if we don't seize the moment and change our ways, but much to gain if we act quickly.

Mr Garrett believes that with the world continuing to warm further, delaying robust action on dangerous climate change is "a crime against humanity".

"Runaway climate change now directly threatens planetary health which human communities depend on for survival. Yet, powerful institutions like governments and corporations that contribute greenhouse emissions refuse to act to significantly reduce the impact of dangerous climate change. It's time they were held to account.

"There are a number of steps people can take to make sure Australia plays a positive role in averting climate chaos, but we need to act now."

Mr Garrett served as president of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) for two terms, which saw significant additions to natural protected areas, and the ACF grow into Australia's leading national environment organisation.

He is the only Australian politician to receive the 'Leaders for a Living Planet' award from the World Wildlife Fund and is a member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to the music industry and environment.

Mr Garrett is delivering the University of Canberra Institute for Applied Ecology's annual Krebs Lecture, dedicated to Professor Charles Krebs for his extraordinary contribution to our understanding and appreciation of our natural world.
Past speakers include former Senator for Tasmania and leader of the Greens, Dr Bob Brown, internationally renowned environmentalist and author Professor Tim Flannery, and sustainability and resilience expert, Dr Brian Walker.
