Sporting mascots serve up free big brekky at UC Open Day

27 August 2015: More than 50 kilos of bacon, 900 eggs, 720 croissants and 30 crates of fresh fruit will be served at the University of Canberra's free big breakfast to kick-start this year's Open Day on Saturday 29 August.

Potential students and their families are invited to enjoy breakfast served by University of Canberra Capitals' mascot Cappie the Giraffe and ACT Brumbies' mascot Brumby Jack before exploring the campus to see what studying at the University of Canberra is like.

Media opportunities:

  • Cappie the Giraffe and Brumby Jack will be practising their cooking skills ahead of the big breakfast from 10.15am-10.45am tomorrow (Friday) on the top floor BBQ/ kitchen area at Cooper Lodge (Cnr Telita and Pantowora Street)

  • Simulating a real-life emergency, assistant professor of nursing Jane Frost and students will demonstrate their interactive nursing workshop to show how to treat wounds and cope under pressure 11am-11.30 tomorrow (Friday) in the nursing labs in building 10, level A, room 6 (campus map)

Open Day is a fantastic opportunity to find out about the wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses available at the University of Canberra – all designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need for a successful and rewarding career.

At the Academic Expo visitors can to talk to academics, course advisors and current students about the courses they're interested in, and attend one of the many interactive displays and demonstrations.

Support staff will also be on hand to discuss campus accommodation, academic skills support, how to apply and campus life. There will be campus tours and a chance for people to test their ball-handling skills using the Brumbies line-out machine or play football with Canberra United.

Other highlights:

  • Get the inside scoop on how to become an online star and launch your own website from Instagram sensations and UC alumnae, The Merrymaker Sisters. 10am-11am
  • Slime and liquid nitrogen experiment: learn how liquid nitrogen and slime can be used to teach some fundamental principles of chemistry. 9am-4pm
  • Forensic lab demonstration and tour. 10.30am-11am and 2pm-2.30pm
  • Gaming demonstration: get hands-on experience in gaming technology. 9am-4pm
  • Robot demonstration: watch resident robot Ardie and his friends play football. 9am-4pm
  • Make your own menthol cream in the pharmacy laboratory. Hourly from 10.30am-3.30pm
  • Test how far you can jump, how fast you can run and how well you can dodge compared to a professional athlete. 11am-11.30am & 1pm-1.30pm
  • Tour the nursing labs from 9am-4pm or take part in an interactive nursing workshop at 2pm-2.30pm or 3pm-3.30pm

  • The University of Canberra Open Day will be held on Saturday 29 August from 9am-4pm. The free big breakfast will be held on the Concourse from 9am-10.30am.
