Biography

Dr Jo Caffery is a UNESCO International Research Fellow with research interests in gender equality, equity and development for rural and remote peoples: linguistic and cultural diversity, and mother-tongue education. Her research methodologies include mixed and unique, qualitative and quantitative methods that are linguistically and culturally relevant to participants and funding agencies.

Jo has extensive experience working with remote Indigenous peoples, particularly women, across many regions of Indigenous Australia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and Pakistan. This experience has enabled her to design and lead new place-conscious teaching and research methodologies for Australian Aid projects in Australasia that focus on culturally appropriate and relevant capacity building programs. Jo’s research and development of women’s team leadership and families training programmes in remote communities of PNG has led to a focus on the barriers and enablers for youth as future farmers.

Jo is a founding member of UC CIRI (The University of Canberra Collaborative Indigenous Research Initiative).  UC CIRI is an initiative that connects with Indigenous communities and multidisciplinary researchers to promote Indigenous advantage at the community level. She regularly develops, reviews or analyses gender-related data and tools that contribute to the development of gender frameworks and guidelines for integrating gender issues into the design of research for development projects. She recently develop ACIAR’s Gender Guidelines.
