Statistics for Researchers

DO YOU NEED HELP WITH STATISTICS?

Did you know that the University employs a consultant to provide statistical advice to members of staff and to research students at honours level or above?

Topics on which help can be provided include

  • design of surveys
  • questionnaire construction and the wording of questions
  • design of experiments
  • entering data so that they can be analyzed using SPSS or SAS or some other statistical package
  • choosing the right analysis
  • using statistical packages such as SPSS and SAS to carry out analyses, which may include tabulations, production of graphs and charts, t tests, analyses of variance, regressions, multivariate analyses and non-parametric analyses
  • the interpretation of the output from analyses, particularly hypothesis tests
  • how to write up the results of analyses in a research paper or thesis.

Details on the nature and extent of statistical assistance it is appropriate for research students to receive can be found in Higher Degrees by Research: policy and procedures, the Gold Book, Part 7, 7.3.3

Simple questions can be sent by email to statistical.consultant@canberra.edu.au.

Alternatively, a request for a meeting can be sent to the same email address. Meetings are usually scheduled to last one hour.
